Research Instruments

Research about management practices and organizations frequently calls for the examination of complex phenomena that are not easily measured. One useful area of information exchange, therefore, is sharing instruments that have been used successfully in defining and measuring organizational variables.

We began the process of collecting instruments in preparation for the MDRC's Feburary 2002 meeting with management researchers, Continuing the Discussion about Management Research. Meeting participants were invited to contribute information about instruments to be shared at the meeting. Colleagues at the Measurement Excellence Initiative(MEI) collaborated with us in that effort. MEI is an HSR&D project based in Houston that is funded to serve as a resource for improving the overall quality of measurement in the health service research community. We are continuing our collaboration with MEI to identify additional organizational instruments.

This section presents brief profiles of the instruments provided for the February meeting and lists a contact person for each. The actual instruments are not attached. We encourage you to contact the person listed for the details about the content, administration and psychometrics of each instrument. With the exception of the instruments contributed by MEI colleagues, these instruments have been used in VA.

We would like to expand this section to include more instruments. If you would like to contribute an instrument that you feel successfully measures an important management or organization domain, please contact us at mdrc.boston@med.va.gov.
